Welcome to the Yamagawa Dojo!

Hello, and welcome to the Yamagawa Dojo website. Yamagawa is the head Dojo for Fudoshin in Victoria, Australia. It is headed up by Darren Ball (Sensei) and is assisted by various Black Belt ranks. The Dojo has been running at it's current location at the Seaford Community Centre for just over two years now. Since 1982, we have been in various venues on the Mornington-Peninsula.

What is Fudoshin?

Fudoshin Ryu is the name of the system of Martial Arts training formed by Soke Robert Lawrence in 1968. It is a fusion of Judo, Jujutsu, Karate, Aikido and Weaponry training to form a complete system of combat and self-defence. We are not, what is commonly termed, an MMA (Mixed Martial Art) system or Freestyle, as we train in only the traditional aspects of each style. The best way to view Fudoshin is a well-balanced education in various traditional Japanese Martial Arts whereby each art is studied together in a syllabus rather than as seperate classes. What is known in Japanese as a Sogo Bugei.

Introduction to our Dojo
The word Dojo means a place to study the 'Way'. This can refer to any place of learning, but in modern times it is most often used in Martial Arts circles. At Fudoshin, we take the meaning of the word very literally, and in it's traditional sense. It is a place of enlightenment of sorts - of the physical, mental and spiritual kind. We follow traditional Japanese etiquette, following the Ways of the Warrior.

Our Dojo is proud to be a member of the Association of Oriental Fudoshin Arts (AOFA), the governing body for the Fudoshin Combat System (Fudoshin Ryu). This Association was set up to maintain the high level of standard and training syllabus that has become indicative of our system.
